I believe innovation is ethical by definition; an innovation is meant to improve an existing condition or serve a common need. There is always a risk associated with innovation that must be assumed by the originator and/or by society. The trouble comes when ethics and legality do not correspond. If the dubious ethics of an organization fall within the bounds of the law, it is society at large that must change the laws to protect itself. In my lifetime we have seen the rise of intrusive data giants, monopolistic communications conglomerates, union-busting mega-retailers, and blatantly unethical corporations regularly choosing to pay regulatory fines and settlements in lieu of protecting their consumers or the environment. Although the far-reaching consequences of innovation may not always be apparent at its introduction into society, it should be the responsibility of the originator to mitigate the harm to its fullest capability. Organizations should maintain an appropriate level of transparency to earn the trust of their clients and consumers, as well as value their well-being over the potential profit.
